Choosing the Right Platform Mix
It’s easy to think of social media and content marketing as the same thing wearing different outfits. They’re not — and understanding the difference is exactly what makes it possible to use both properly, instead of quietly relying on just one and wondering why growth has stalled.
They solve two different problems
Social media keeps your business visible to people who already know you. It builds familiarity — every post is a small reminder that you exist, that you’re active, that you’re worth paying attention to. What it’s not built for is bringing in people who’ve never heard of you at all.
That’s content marketing’s job. Blog articles, LinkedIn posts, and website copy built around what your ideal customers are actually typing into Google are what get new people to find you — not through a feed they already follow, but through a search they were already making. It’s slower to build than a social following, but it keeps working long after a single post has been scrolled past.
One earns attention, the other keeps it
Think of it as two ends of the same customer journey. Content marketing does the finding — someone searches a problem, lands on an article that actually helps them, and forms a first impression of your business before they’ve spoken to anyone. Social media does the keeping — once they’ve found you, consistent, familiar posts are what turn a one-time visitor into someone who trusts you enough to eventually buy.
Run only social, and you’re limited to the audience you’ve already built — you’re preaching to people who already know you, with no real engine bringing new people in. Run only content, and you might get found through search, but with nothing keeping you top of mind, that visitor has no reason to remember you a week later.
What this looks like in practice
A blog article about a problem your customers face becomes a LinkedIn post. A case study written for your website becomes three social posts spread across a month. A frequently asked question from Instagram comments becomes the basis of your next article. Used properly, content and social aren’t two separate workstreams — they’re one strategy feeding itself, where nothing you create is only ever used once.
The bottom line
If growth has plateaued and you can’t quite figure out why, it’s worth asking which half of this equation you’re missing. Businesses posting consistently on social but invisible on Google are being found by no one new. Businesses ranking well but silent on social are being forgotten by everyone who does find them. The businesses growing fastest right now are usually doing both — deliberately, and in a way where each one makes the other work harder.
